Matthew 1:1–6
December 7 Devotional – Grace & Truth
The Christmas story doesn’t begin in a manger. It begins in a genealogy.
Matthew opens his gospel not with shepherds or angels, but with a long list of names—some well-known, some nearly forgotten, and some we might not expect to see at all. Yet each name matters. Each generation tells us something about the heart of God and His plan for redemption. The genealogy of Jesus anchors the Christmas story in history, promise, and identity.
Matthew intentionally connects Jesus to Abraham, the father of the promise, reminding us that God keeps His word. Through Abraham, God promised a blessing that would extend to all nations, and in Jesus, that promise reaches its fulfillment. Then Matthew points us to David, the promised king. From David’s royal line comes the eternal King who would reign forever.
But hidden within this royal list are surprising names like Rahab, Ruth, and Bathsheba—outsiders, widows, and stories marked by brokenness. Their presence in Jesus’ family tree is not accidental. It is a declaration of the kind of King He is. A King who gathers the overlooked, restores the hurting, and redeems the unlikely. A King whose kingdom makes room for anyone willing to come.
In this season, Matthew’s genealogy offers more than history. It offers home. It reminds us that we, too, have a place in God’s family—not because of our perfection, but because of His promise. Jesus came through a lineage marked by grace so He could build a family marked by grace.
As we enter the Christmas season, let this truth settle deeply into your heart: your story is not too messy, too complicated, or too insignificant for God. The King who came through an imperfect family came for imperfect people. There is room for you at His table, and there is purpose in your place within His story.
Reflection Questions
Which name or story in Jesus’ genealogy stands out to you and why?
Where in your own story have you seen God bring beauty from brokenness?
How does knowing you belong to God’s family shape your approach to this season?
A Short Prayer
Lord, thank You for writing redemption through ordinary people and for making room for us in Your family through Jesus. As we enter this season, help us remember that our identity is rooted in Your promise and not in our past. Draw us closer to the King who came for us. Amen.
