Royal Worship: Offering Our Gifts to the King

Matthew 2:1–12

December 28 Devotional – Grace & Truth

The Christmas story does not end at the manger. It expands outward, drawing in unexpected travelers from distant lands—men known for their wisdom, study, and discernment. The wise men arrive with a simple but profound question: “Where is the one who has been born King of the Jews?”

Their journey begins not with certainty but with a sign. A star appears, and they respond. They set out with costly gifts and open hearts, willing to cross unfamiliar terrain because they believe the King is worth finding. Their search leads them first to Jerusalem, a place of earthly authority, but the true King is not there. He is not seated in a palace. He is not surrounded by servants. He is found in humble circumstances, just as He was on the night of His birth.

When the wise men finally arrive, their response is immediate and unmistakable: “They bowed down and worshiped Him.” Before offering gold, frankincense, or myrrh, they offer themselves. Kneeling, surrendering, adoring—because worship is not measured by ceremony, but by posture.

Their gifts are meaningful, but their worship is transformational. Gold for a King. Frankincense for deity. Myrrh for the sacrifice to come. Through these offerings, they acknowledge who Jesus is and why He came.

As the year draws to a close, the story of the wise men invites us to consider our own worship. Not just songs sung or words spoken, but the posture of our lives. Worship is giving God what He is worthy of—our time, our trust, our obedience, our gratitude, our devotion. It is kneeling our hearts before Him in reverence and joy.

What gift will you bring into the New Year? You may not carry gold or incense, but you can offer what the Lord desires most—your presence, your surrender, your willingness to follow His leading. Like the wise men, may we enter His presence with open hands and leave changed by the encounter.
