Matthew 1:21–25
December 21 Devotional – Grace & Truth
Before Jesus ever took His first breath, before shepherds arrived at the manger or wise men followed a star, heaven made a declaration about who this child would be. His identity was not left to speculation, confusion, or silence. God spoke a royal decree, wrapped in two names that reveal the mission of the King.
Joseph, shaken by the news of Mary’s pregnancy, receives a message that changes everything: “You are to give Him the name Jesus, because He will save His people from their sins.” The name Jesus means salvation. It is not merely a title; it is a promise. His purpose is woven into His very identity. He comes not only to comfort but to rescue. Not only to walk with us but to redeem us.
Then Matthew recalls the words of the prophet: “He will be called Immanuel,” meaning “God with us.” In these two names—Jesus and Immanuel—we encounter the heart of the gospel. He saves us. He stays with us. Salvation and presence, mercy and nearness, redemption and companionship. The King’s decree announces both deliverance and intimacy.
At Christmas, we are surrounded by names: shopping lists, gift tags, family gatherings. But no name changes us like the name of Jesus. His name breaks chains. His name restores hope. His name brings forgiveness to weary hearts and light to dark places. His name assures us that God has not remained distant but has come near in love.
As you step into the final days before Christmas, let these names steady your spirit. Whatever weight you carry, whatever questions sit heavy on your heart, you are not alone. Immanuel is here. Whatever failures or fears whisper to you, salvation is near. Jesus has come.
This is the decree from heaven: the King has arrived, and He comes with the authority to save and the love to stay.
